Could Your Food Be The Reason Behind Your Baby’s Colic?

As a mother, you would do everything in your ability to keep your baby happy and healthy. In fact, most of what you do in a day is for the sake of your baby. Now, you might have taken a closer look at your diet during pregnancy. But what moms often forget is that postpartum diet can affect the baby’s health too!

For the first 6-7 months, a baby gets all their nourishment from breast milk alone. The mother’s diet can affect the quality of the breast milk as traces of the food she consumes can pass on to breast milk. Although every baby is different, some foods in the mother’s diet can cause indigestion problems and colic in the baby.

So it is important to eat nutritious foods and avoid foods which when consumed, affect your baby’s mood on that day.

Here are some dietary guidelines you can follow to keep yourself healthy and your baby’s tummy happy in these early months:

Eat Homemade Food

During the post-delivery period and while breastfeeding, your best option is homemade food, as it will be healthy, hygienically prepared and fresh. What’s more, your body is already used to homemade food, so it is likely that your baby is also used to this food.

Stay Hydrated

Along with nutrients, breast milk is also your baby’s source of water, helping keep your little one hydrated. So to avoid getting dehydrated, make sure you have enough water during the breastfeeding months. Water is also important to help your cells and tissues repair and recover after delivery.

Taste of Foods

Several studies have shown that your baby develops a taste for foods during pregnancy and through breastfeeding. The different tasting foods you eat could also help your baby develop a taste for some of these foods in the future. Which is why it can be good if you eat a variety of healthy foods during this time – your little one may grow up loving these healthy foods!

Foods To Avoid

Although every baby is different, doctors recommend skipping alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, very spicy foods, and to limit your consumption of legumes, nuts, and milk products as these foods have been linked to baby colic in some cases.

So your nutrition during breastfeeding is an important element in keeping you and your baby healthy. Breastmilk being the primary source of nutrition, you should focus on a balanced diet rich in fresh and hygienic foods as this will keep you healthy and your baby’s tummy happy.

Although there are no definite rules about these foods, keeping a watch on your food can help reduce the chances of colic for your baby. There is no need to avoid any of these foods, but simply to keep an eye on your baby on the days you eat these foods. Remember, moderation is key, and with a balanced approach, you can secure your and your baby’s health.
